About Insteon

Another smart home technology that can control light, climate and HVC, motion sensors and electrical devices is Insteon. Insteon have been developed in 2005 by company SmartLabs. In 2017 company, and technology, was acquired by Richmond Capital Partners.


Insteon use dual-band network, which is combination of existing wiring inside house and radio frequency technology. Exiting powerlines act as backup line of data transmission, in case that system find some problem with radio frequency communication. Insteon use mesh network, which means that every device in system will repeat message (telegram), so losing data is lowered to minimum. Theoretically, there is no limit in system size, you can put unlimited number of devices in one system. All thought, something like 1000 devices will be practical system limit. System also will work without HUB, but will limit some of functions that was included in HUB itself. In most of cases, when there is failure on HUB system will lose possibility to be remote controlled.


Security is on high level, as user need to have physical device in hand in order to add it to system and control it. Every device itself will protect any unwanted access to it, and it will hide address and functions from external scanning. Address is unique for every device (something like MAC address in local area network), and it is hardcoded by manufacture. When adding device to system, that unique address must be typed inside HUB to make it part of system. There were several rumors regarding Insteon security, but nothing big come out from that.

Building system

Basically, you need to purchase some of insteon devices and HUB that will make possible to connect that device for control. Afterwards, you can add as many number of devices (as I said theoretically), and it can communicate with already connected devices.


Insteon is, in some level, compatible with X10 protocol, as there is a way to exchange protocol and telegrams with it. Also, Insteon is compatible with Amazon Alexa. RTI and Control4 are also compatible with Insteon system.

About KNX

What is KNX Standard ?

KNX is, to make is simple, home automation standard for managing lighting, blinds, climate control, hvac, security systems and multimedia systems. Standard was created as evolution of three standards European Instillation Bus (known as EIB), European Home System Protocol (EHS) and BatiBUS.  Device certification and all protocols used for communication are signed by KNX organization. This is guarantee that device will work inside KNX system. 

Devices in system can be connected using several communication media: twisted pair wiring (most common way), power line, Radio (RF) or using Ethernet communication. When everything is connected, it is regardless how you have connected device to KNX system. Devices will communicate with all other devices in that system. For twisted pair communication media, 2x2x0.8 JY(sty)y cable need to be used.

Basic KNX system will include: power supply (to give power needed by BUS), sensor (to send some signal to BUS like touch sensor or lighting sensor) and actuator to do some action (open/close circuit or so). When you push sensor (or some level of lighting is detected) sistem will send telegram to BUS, and “search” for actuator that need to act if this sensor is pressed. Really simple 🙂

KNX system can link 57.375 devices, divided in several lines and areas. Yes, this is kind of limitation, but after that you can connect them over IP . Let’s say that system size is really endless.


One of big advantages is topology of system, because BUS (twisted pair as most common way of interconnection) can be created as line, parallel, star, tree or any other topology. Only thing that need to be respect is BUS limitation in length and number of devices connected per one system. Thought different couplers (IP or BUS) you can expand system limitless.

KNX is worldwide standard for Home and building control, based on 25 years of experience and data exchanging now with more that 450 manufactures. Point is that all of this manufactures that have “signed” KNX Standard uses same protocol for communication between devices. As result, all devices that have KNX standard (protocol) can communicate and exchange information’s. Home owner or installer have possibility to mix devices from different manufactures as they need it / like it! So, you have big pool of devices and systems that can be connected to KNX installation, and it is on installer or designer (at the end on homeowner) to choose design of functions that they need for every particular installation.

IoT in KNX

In last years, KNX is start to open to IoT technology. In another words start to lower barrier that he had in past with this kind of devices. This is big advantage of KNX, as IoT is growing really fast. Last several years it is common that all devices are somehow smart or have some smart capabilities. KNX is giving possibility to integrate some of that devices in your smart house system. In future, this will for sure be big segment of KNX standard.

KNX Secyre

Also, KNX Secyre is part of KNX association commitment to secure communication. This is still newbee, but with new devices and software solutions communication can be encrypted acording to AES128 standard. This will lower risk of unwanted connections and data exchange on system, and will give users and home owners possibility to protect their system.

As this is really fast growing market segment, you can see lot of manufactures that are offering different open or closed “smart” systems. Also, you have noticed that most of new devices have “smart” written somewhere on device packing. But, what is really SMART?

Based on experience, when we speak about smart home system, we speak about devices interconnected with other devices in home or flat. But, due to lot of different devices, user can now understand whir is really smart, and what is only remote controllable. TO be honest, in some cases we need to look twice to figure out what manufacture is really offering J
